"A Quick Live Sound Q & A" in Canadian Musician magazine

Last month, I received a very cool phone call and email from Mr. Andrew King - Editor of Canadian Musician magazine. Andrew wanted permission to use my name and job title for an article that he was writing for this issue of the magazine. I thought it was the coolest thing to be contacted by a magazine editor asking me to use my name in print! Of course, I said "yes"!

Last year, I was reading the September/October 2011 issue of CM magazine specifically the "Live Sound" column written my Mark Desloges - Audio Technician with Tour Tech East. I really enjoyed the piece so I decided to email Mark Desloges directly with some more specific audio questions. Mark responded to my email with all the information that I needed.

Needless to say, the editor Andrew King really enjoyed the question and answer kind of thing and thought it would make a good article for the magazine. So, my email questions, name and job title all made it into print! Yeah! You can view the article in the online edition of Canadian Musician magazine on their website. Here is the link: www.canadianmusician.com/online

Click on the web link, let the online editon of the magazine load into your computer and then flip through to page 60 to view the article. Enjoy!

My Updated Business Card

Here is a copy of my newly designed "Sound Technician" business card. I am a trained sound technician working freelance jobs with the Sarnia/Lambton area.

Do you have a sound system for your band but, nobody to operate it? If so, that is where I can be of service. I normally work as a sound technician only using sound systems provided by the band or artist.

If you require a sound system for your show or event, I usually rent the appropriate gear locally for the requirements of your show. I will then charge an additional fee for the rental cost of the equipment.

If you are interested in using my services, please contact me directly to discuss the details of your show.
I will provide you with a job quotation based on the requirements of your production.

Please contact me directly via the following methods:

Ron Behro
Telephone: (519) 336-1767
Email: rgbehro@hotmail.com

Thanks for stopping by. I love forward to helping you on your next show or gig.

Working More Sound Gigs This Year

Last weekend I finally had a chance to work a sound gig out in Camlachie Community Centre. It was really good show even if the audience count was low. The event featured "Borderline" and "Mike Mulligan as Roy Orbison - a tribute show". The show went well and I had good time mixing the gig.

Then yesterday I got a phone call to work a show at The Stubborn on June 5th. The band is "Scott Manery and the Barnburners". This is band I have worked with a number of time before and I always have a fun time mixing sound for them. I am looking forward to gig.

Then on June 10th I will be down on the Sarnia waterfront at the Dow People Place mixing a show for "Borderline" on the outdoor stage. I like working the outdoor shows when I can get one. I am actually the exclusive sound tech for "Borderline" and I have been working with them now for 5 years. Every summer they place a gig each month during the summer months at the Dow People Place and I am there for every gig.

In August I mix sound for the "Hot August Nights" gig put on by the Sarnia Street Machines group. The event features "Borderline" and "The Barnburners". This event is a fundraiser where the money raised goes to purchase new hospital equipment for our local community. It is full house every year!

So, as you can see I am getting more sound gigs to work at in my free time. Hey, if there is anyone out there who requires a sound technician for an upcoming gig, please feel free to contact me directly. Take note of my business card below.

Cheers Everyone!

Ron

An Open Letter From Henry Rollins

Recently, I found a group on Facebook that is called (Don t Piss Off The Sound Guy) which is a funny look at how sound techs get treated by the musicians and artists along the way. On the group page I did find some great pics that people have already posted and I wanted to post one.

Here is an open letter written by singer Henry Rollins talking about the stage manager and the crew. Take a look:
Cheers!

Sound Tech Business Card Design # 2

I posted the first design of my sound tech business card on my facebook page and asked for comments, suggestions, etc. My friend Bex from New York, a theatre tech, gave me some suggestions for a redesign. In her opinion the blue background bar with yellow lettering was too distracting. She suggested I just have a black background at the bottom with white lettering. As for the top background and lettering, I decided go with bright yellow letter and black background. The yellow letter really stands out against the black just like bright lights on a dark stage. Take a good look and tell me what you think.

Cheers!

Sound Technician With A New Business Card

Finally I have decided to create a business card to advertise myself as a freelance Sound Technician. When I do the sound gigs around town I figured that I should have a business that I could give out to anyone asking about my services. I do not work for a company, I work for bands who already have their own sound gear. I come and do the live sound mix for the shows using the band gear. I would like to start my own sound company and work part-time as a professional sound tech in the Sarnia-Lambton area. My dream is to get some money together to buy enough gear for a medium sized sound system for most of the bands that play around here. I could just work out of my basement to start as to keep the costs down. If I have a business using just my own personal name then I would not be required to register a business name. If I were to create a company and give it a name, then I would have to register the name with the government. Standard business procedure. Now I just need to find the cash to buy some basic sound system gear. Mixing console, mics, stands, cables, power amps, speakers, subs, stage monitors, EQs, EFX processors, etc. Most people I have talked to about being a freelance tech all want to know if I have my own gear and that is where the problem is. Except for bands that have their own gear and just want a tech. With a sound system I would be in better shape to secure gigs with the many great bands and artists we have here in Sarnia. I will take any suggestions or help with creating my own sound company. I need some constructive ideas of how to begin. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ron
