Working More Sound Gigs This Year

Last weekend I finally had a chance to work a sound gig out in Camlachie Community Centre. It was really good show even if the audience count was low. The event featured "Borderline" and "Mike Mulligan as Roy Orbison - a tribute show". The show went well and I had good time mixing the gig.

Then yesterday I got a phone call to work a show at The Stubborn on June 5th. The band is "Scott Manery and the Barnburners". This is band I have worked with a number of time before and I always have a fun time mixing sound for them. I am looking forward to gig.

Then on June 10th I will be down on the Sarnia waterfront at the Dow People Place mixing a show for "Borderline" on the outdoor stage. I like working the outdoor shows when I can get one. I am actually the exclusive sound tech for "Borderline" and I have been working with them now for 5 years. Every summer they place a gig each month during the summer months at the Dow People Place and I am there for every gig.

In August I mix sound for the "Hot August Nights" gig put on by the Sarnia Street Machines group. The event features "Borderline" and "The Barnburners". This event is a fundraiser where the money raised goes to purchase new hospital equipment for our local community. It is full house every year!

So, as you can see I am getting more sound gigs to work at in my free time. Hey, if there is anyone out there who requires a sound technician for an upcoming gig, please feel free to contact me directly. Take note of my business card below.

Cheers Everyone!

Ron

Rik Emmett Playing Sarnia Ribfest July 24, 2010

Recently found out the Rik Emmett is playing a free concert at this year's Sarnia Ribfest on July 24th, 2010. Rik Emmett has always been one of my most favourite guitarists and I am looking forward to the free concert and a night out with my friends. Last time Rik Emmett played in Sarnia was for a guitar clinic show at The Lazy Duck Lounge back in Feb. 2007. It was the best $5.00 ticket I ever bought for a show. The venue was a small room upstairs with capacity for 200 people only and I got front seats for the show. It was so awesome to watch the guitar fretwork of Mr. E.! Afterwards, Rik stuck around to autograph posters for each member of the audience and a chance to talk to one of my favourite Canadian musicians. The concert this summer is going to be such a blast!

Check out Rik Emmett's web site at www.rikemmett.com for more information

Listening To More Jazz Lately

When it comes to my musical tastes, I generally like listening to rock music which is what I grew up with. As I got older, I got more interested in blues and jazz music. When I was younger and working as a theatre technician, I got to work on all sorts of concerts at the venues I worked at. Jazz music grabbed my attention when I was in college and after once I was tech. My favourite jazz music was by: Manteca, UZEB, The Rippingtons, David Sanborn, and from a hometown artist, Jim Clayton. Jim Clayton released his first CD called "Jim Clayton's Greenhouse - Muskoka" in 1997. Once I got a hold of this disc, I have always loved it. This is one excellent jazz CD! I would recommend it to any jazz fan. Jim Clayton has recorded more music since that first CD but, living here in Sarnia, I find it hard to get good jazz music CDs in the music stores around here. For some reason, the stores just don't stock it because, jazz music is not that popular around this city. I am sure you could find the CD in the music stores in the bigger cities. Jim Clayton is now a native of Toronto, ON. where jazz music rules!

For an excellent review of the Jim Clayton's Greenhouse - Muskoka CD, go to the following link on the jazzreview.com web site.

An Open Letter From Henry Rollins

Recently, I found a group on Facebook that is called (Don t Piss Off The Sound Guy) which is a funny look at how sound techs get treated by the musicians and artists along the way. On the group page I did find some great pics that people have already posted and I wanted to post one.

Here is an open letter written by singer Henry Rollins talking about the stage manager and the crew. Take a look:

100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs

The other night I watched a VH-1 program which was a countdown of the 100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs. The songs were a result of people going onto the VH-1 web site to cast votes for their top 10 hard rock songs from a selected list of music. Of course, the list was subjective to the songs listed on the web site. There were some omissions that didn't make the list depending on who's music you are a fan of. You should have seen some of the comments made about that on the VH-1 forum page. Anyhow, I am sure that all of us would not have the same exact top 100 list as we all are fans of different songs from that genre.

What songs would you have on your top 100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs?

Feel free to post a few songs that are you personal favourites. There are no right or wrong answers here. Have fun with it.

Here are some of my personal favourites:

Tom Sawyer - Rush
Sunshine of Your Love - Cream
Runnin' With The Devil - Van Halen
Stone In Love - Journey
Don't Tell Me You Love Me - Night Ranger
Back In Black - AC/DC
Walk This Way - Aerosmith
Paranoid - Black Sabbath
Still Of the Night - Whitesnake
Photograph - Def Leppard
Raise A Little Hell - Trooper
Fight The Good Fight - Triumph
Rock and Roll - Led Zeppelin

and so on.....
